OPERATOR AGE
Boat operators born after January 1, 1989 must have in their possession a TWRA-issued card showing proof of successful completion of a nationally approved boater safety exam administered by an approved representative of the TWRA.
Persons under 12 years of age may not operate a powered boat unless they are accompanied by an adult who can take immediate control of the vessel.
An exception is made if the boat is powered by an outboard motor of 8.5 horsepower or less.
Personal watercraft may not be rented by anyone younger than 16 years of age.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Boating education enhances the knowledge of boat operators and is a fundamental component of knowing how to safely and legally operate your boat. Over half of the states require proof of passing a boater education safety course in order to legally operate a powerboat or PWC. Even if not required by law, taking a safe boating course will help make your boating experience much more enjoyable, and you may even receive a premium discount on your boat insurance rates.
