REGISTRATION AND TITLING
VESSELS REQUIRED TO BE TITLED
Vessels in this state, irrespective of whether used on waters of this state, is required to be titled within thirty (30) calendar days from the purchase date or from the date the owner becomes a resident of this state and annually registered. A Certificate of Registration is valid for 1 year and expires on June 30 of each year.
OUTBOARD MOTORS
With few exceptions, every outboard motor in excess of ten (10) horsepower in this state, irrespective of whether used on waters of this state, is required to be titled within thirty (30) calendar days from the purchase date, or from the expiration of registration, or from the date the owner becomes a resident of this state and registered under the provisions of the Oklahoma Vessel and Motor Registration Act.
It is unlawful for any person to knowingly possess any outboard motor or outboard motor part upon which the serial number required has been removed, erased, defaced or otherwise altered to prevent identification.
Owners of registered motors are issued a motor registration decal which must be renewed annually and should be displayed on the upper back side of the motor cowling extending from the left side to the rear.
HOMEMADE VESSEL
Before a homemade vessel is issued a hull identification number from the Commission, the vessel and the motor shall be inspected by a commissioned officer of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Division of the Department of Public Safety or by any other employee of the Department or any other law enforcement officer of the state as the Commissioner of Public Safety may designate, pursuant to the rules promulgated by the Commissioner of Public Safety. For the purposes of this act, "homemade vessel" means any vessel not allotted a hull identification number (HIN) by a manufacturer, and specifically excludes any vessel upon which the hull identification number has been covered, altered, defaced, destroyed, or removed.
DISPLAY OF PERMANENT NUMBER AND STATE CURRENCY DECAL
Except as otherwise provided by this section, every vessel on the waters of this state shall display the permanent number assigned to it by the Oklahoma Tax Commission or by a federally recognized Indian tribe which number shall not be obliterated, erased, mutilated, removed or missing.
State currency Decals must be affixed on both sides of the bow, behind the number (towards the stern) and in-line with the number.
Documented Boats
Official Documentation MUST be carried onboard a documented vessel at all times.
- A Document serves as a certificate of nationality and an authorization for a trade.
- Documented vessels must comply with all state and federal laws.
- Registration fee and display of validation sticker is required in some states.
- Official number must be permanently affixed to an integral structure of the boat. This number is referred to as the “main beam” number.
- The main beam number must match the official number on the document.
- Name and hailing port of the boat must be displayed at least once anywhere on the hull (most boater display this information on the transom) - at least 4” in height, contrasting in color to the hull.
- Name and hailing port must match information on the official document.
Periodically check to see that the numbers and decals are in good condition. A missing number, or having them improperly displayed is a good reason for a law enforcement officer to stop you.
